Tissues around the birth canal become soft the vulva is enlarged and flabby. A long string of mucus may hang from the vulva. Other signs of impending labor include mucus discharge from the vulva as the cervical plug/seal softens and is expelled. Occasionally the plug in the end of the teat comes out, with secretion on the end of the teat. Even if the udder has been large for many days, the teats themselves often don’t become full and distended until the cow is nearly ready to calve. One clue that calving will take place within about 24 hours is the teats filling. Others “bag up” overnight and can fool you they may calve before you realize they are ready. Some cows and heifers have so much udder development that you think calving is imminent, but they go many more days before the actual event. It may begin enlarging as early as six weeks before she calves (especially in heifers) or may suddenly fill during the last few days. One of the first signs of approaching calving is development of her udder. As a cow or heifer nears the end of gestation, her body makes changes to aid the birth process. The cow may calve ahead of or later than her projected due date and it can sometimes be a challenge to predict when she’ll calve. If either the sire or dam has genetics for a longer gestation, results may be mixed, depending on which trait is inherited by the calf. If both sire and dam have short gestation genetics, the calf will be born earlier. Instead of siring a 140-pound calf, they’d sire an 80-pound calf and it would be born a lot easier,” he says.įetal development and rate of maturation (determining when the calf reaches full term and triggers labor) is influenced by his genetics. I found some that fit that category and started using those. I was looking for Charolais bulls that had 283-day-or-less average gestation length. They had exact gestation lengths on all of them. “I went to the Canadian Conception to Consumer test, where they verified bulls through their testing program. So I started looking for bulls that sired calves with shorter gestation so I could get my cows bred back on time,” he says. When a cow calves 10 days or two weeks late (and has a big calf and a hard birth), she’s losing that amount of time to recover and rebreed. As I was waiting, 283 days would pass, and 10 days later I’d be still waiting and thinking she was bred to the clean-up bull.Ībout 15 days later she had a 140-pound calf and it’s obvious it’s not by the clean-up bull – it’s that many days late. “I’d note that a certain cow was bred on a certain date and should calve on such-and-such day. I moved onto the place just as the cows were starting to calve,” he says. “When I bought this ranch in the late 1960s, the Charolais cows on the place were A.I.-bred to some French bulls that were popular at that time. Buddy Westphal, a Charolais breeder at Valley View Charolais Ranch near Polson, Montana, has been interested in gestation length for many years – particularly as it applies to calving ease and giving cows more time to recover and breed back.

Raised beds can help separate your green onion plants from encroaching grasses. They need fertile soil that drains readily, but the roots are shallow, so you can incorporate compost or other organic matter into the top six inches to prepare the site.Īvoid planting green onions in areas with perennial grasses like Bermuda or quack grass because the deep, tough grass roots hamper effective weed control around the onions. Green onions need at least six hours of direct sunlight, but full sun exposure is best. Thin the seedlings to 1 inch spacing when they are a few inches tall.Keep the ground evenly moist as the seeds germinate.Sow seeds densely in the rows and cover with ¼ to ½ inch of soil.Create shallow furrows in rows about 18 inches apart.Direct sow into well-worked soil containing ample good-quality compost or aged manure. Once the ground is able to be worked in spring, you can plant your green onion seeds outdoors. Mine have scorched tips from touching the hot lights! Direct Sowing Green Onion Seeds Outdoors I'll remove each pot from the plastic wrap once the seeds sprout.Īfter four weeks, fertilize the seedlings with a half-strength liquid fertilizer every week until you transplant. Also remember to raise your grow lights as your plants get taller. I planted all my vegetable seeds in these small peat pots, and covered them with plastic wrap to retain moisture. The seeds do not need light to germinate, but bottom heat from a heat mat can speed up sprouting. Give the seedlings bright sunlight or artificial light all day as soon as they emerge. Cover the seeds with about ¼ inch of soil.Sow several seeds per cell or scatter about 20 seeds on the soil surface of a 6-inch pot.Fill trays of small cells or pots with a high-quality seed starting soil mix.Depending on your growing conditions, seeds started in early April can be ready for transplanting at the start of May. You can start seeds in flats or seed trays indoors and keep them under artificial light for 4 to 12 weeks before transplanting after the frost season ends. Onion seeds are only viable for one year, so always use fresh seeds. Green onion seeds sprout in a wide temperature range between 45 to 80☏, taking between 7 and 14 days to germinate. Here's what they look like: How to Plant Green Onion Seeds This year, I'm growing Evergreen White Nebuka green onions from seed. ‘Italian Red of Florence’ has bright-red, oblong, slightly bulging lower stems, delicious raw and cooked.‘Red Baron Bunching’ produces burgundy-red stems that bulb up if left to grow, producing red mini-onions, perfect for pickling.‘Santa Claus’ has red below-ground stems that deepen in color as temperatures drop.Heat and cold tolerant and popular in Asian cuisine. ‘Ishikura’ has tender, extra-long leaves up to 2 feet tall.‘Long White Evergreen,’ an heirloom with 12-inch plus greens and a crisp, mild flavor.‘White Lisbon’ is an old, reliable cultivar that grows well in many soil types and climates. You can find dozens of green onion varieties differing in leaf size, bulb color and shape, flavor and spiciness, days to maturity, heat and cold tolerance, and pest resistance. Unfortunately, they don’t compete well with other vegetation, so regular weeding is necessary. Green onions grow best in mild temperatures and loamy ground with good drainage. However, some varieties, such as spring onions, form small bulbs with even more flavor. Instead, they grow slender white or red stems underground with narrow, tall leaves. Many green onion types do not form round bulbs like regular onions. The plants can be spaced close together but need full sun and ample water to thrive. You can start them indoors or direct sow them in garden soil. Graphic abstractĪnderson WE, Yang V (1995) Liquid rocket engine combustion instability. This study leads to novel observations on the asymmetric nature of shear layers, which can result in hitherto observed dynamical states. A general framework for such oscillations is then applied, leading to identifying specific conditions that need to be satisfied to enable the existence of these oscillations. Further diagnosis employing time-resolved OH* chemiluminescence and particle image velocimetry reveals the amplitude modulation of the quasi-periodic oscillation as a result of staggered vorticity distribution across the bluff body which results in asymmetric heat release rate distribution. The state is seen to be unstable to incremental changes in Re and transitioning to limit cycle oscillations subsequently. An interesting dynamical behavior identified as two-period quasi-periodic oscillations is observed, which has not been reported in prior literature. Continuous wavelet transform of the pressure oscillations reveals that at different Re, the dynamical nature of oscillations is topologically different, although they have identical spectral content. It is observed that the dominant frequency (mode) shifts from the fundamental duct-acoustic mode to the first harmonic, as Re is varied. The thermo-acoustic instability behavior of non-premixed hydrogen combustion is analyzed in the present work with the inlet Reynolds number, Re as the control parameter. A group photo of Scotland’s 1903 international golf team The Origins of Modern Golf It is derived from the Scottish words ‘golfand’ or ‘golfing’ meaning ‘to strike’ or ‘to drive forward with violence.’ ‘To golf’ was a common phrase recorded in 18th-century dictionaries.Ī modern misconception is that the word ‘golf’ is an acronym for ‘Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.’ This, however, was a joke that only appeared in the 20th century and was not even true, given that women played golf long before that. Some believe that ‘golf’ is a purely Scottish term and does not come from the Dutch at all. When the game appeared in Scotland, the common 14th or 15th-century Scottish dialect turned it into ‘goff’ or ‘gouff.’ It was in the 16th century that the game began to actually be called ‘golf.’ King James II’s ban preceded this but it was not the common word for the game until the 16th century. These all mean ‘club’ or ‘stick,’ derived from the proto-Germanic ‘kulth,’ Old Norse ‘kolfr,’ or German ‘kolben.’ The old name for golf was ‘colf,’ ‘kolf,’ ‘kolve.’ That is how the Dutch referred to the sport. Historians hesitate to draw any connections between the two, however, saying that similar games have existed all over the world. It details some rules for a game that is very similar to golf, played on a lawn with holes. There is even a book, published in 1282, called ‘Wan Jing’ (Manual of the Ball Game). The 18-hole golf course, which is now the standard, first came into being in 1764, introduced by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.Īn interesting fact is that chuiwan (meaning ‘hit ball’), played in ancient China in the 13th and 14th centuries, is very similar to the game of golf. Called ‘Articles and Laws at Playing in Golf,’ this was released by The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The oldest recorded rules for golf were released in 1744. The addition of holes in golf is what distinguishes it from other stick and ball games and was a Scottish invention. The ban was lifted from golf in 1502 by King James IV when he himself became a golfer. As we can see from James II’s edict, it was clearly an immensely popular game. Golf as we know it with its 18-hole course and rules originated in Scotland. However, when we think of who invented golf, we generally think of the Scots. Dutch artwork from the time often depicts people playing ‘colf.’ It was a long game, just like modern golf is, and was played in streets and courtyards. These two games were called chole and jeu de mail. This game was originally called ‘colf’ and was a mix of two games that had been imported into Holland. The person who managed to get the ball to the target in the fewest number of shots was the winner. In that early game, a person would use a stick to hit a leather ball toward a target. However, the most likely place where the modern game of golf originated is either Holland or Scotland.Ī game very similar to golf was played by the Dutch in the 13th century CE. These classic games were common with people all over the world, for many centuries. It is one of many games, like hockey or bandy, that originated with simple stick and ball games. The origin place of golf could be anywhere from China to Laos to the Netherlands to ancient Egypt or Rome. Who invented golf and When and Where Was Golf Invented? Google and this company believes the word "FLOW" used in a mobile game will inadvertently make users believe your game is tied to this other franchise. The issue here is that trademark deals with your brand recognition. To have your app approved, you must remove the "FLOW" trademark from the app title. " But Google has agreed that it does infringe Big Duck's numerous worldwide registered trademarks for "Flow" for mobile games and puzzle games. "Jake, I understand your frustration given that your app has been removed. I can't afford lawyers etc, I just would rather not give in to what feels like bullying unless I have no other choice. I can do this, and it looks like I don't have a choice, but it seems insane that a completely unrelated app can be taken down for using a common English word. I tried reasoning with the lawyer who sent the takedown (as Google says to contact them), and was told my only option is to change the name of my game. The trademark in question is "Flow", apparently owned by a game about joining dots. So much so I find it edgy to return to the other three! I hope to see another Flow app emerge that changes up the game and mixes and matches as well as the Hexes do! It’s a pleasing aesthetic change in addition to the functional, problem solving dimension. The Hex Flows is my favorite of the 4 Flow apps. It’s a good way for me to set aside my frustrations for a bit and focus on puzzling. I’ve found their Flow series to be a great de-stressed after a long day of classes, work, arguments, glitchy electronics. I’m a perfectionist, more or less, so I like to go for the ace straight away. They add a fun and refreshing change to the puzzles. I love their new, ‘wacky’ packs - with mechanics/layout twists, such as the amoeba pack. Buying additional puzzles even removes ads for you! App is fairly regularly updated with new flow colors (if you are into different aesthetics) as well as new packs of puzzles. Plenty of content for a free puzzle game, & the in-app purchases are very reasonable particularly for the amount you get from such a small sum. I don’t see anything wrong with this app! Keep up the great work and thank you for your time for this great game! This way, you can play your brain puzzles and have a fun challenge for yourself instead of advertisements challenging your patience. Even better, there are not that many advertisements. There is also a time trial, which lets you select an amount of time to play for and then you try and solve as many puzzles as possible before time runs out! It is a fantastic challenge for those who set their goals pretty high, for those who want to test their limits, or really for anybody who wants to try something to get your brain into action! There are advertisements, yet they are not always videos and you may click the “x” immediately. I definitely recommend this game! I love this game and, like me, if you love brain puzzles then you may love this game also! I love the colors! They are warm, inviting, and make a colorful board! Each board on each level is different and is great for a good brain game! There are one hundred and fifty puzzles per pack and several different packs so you can keep on playing! If you are the type who loves brain puzzles, but have finished all of the packs, there is even a “Daily Puzzles” pack that changes each day. |
